There are several ways to get around San Francisco. Cable cars go near some of the most popular tourist destinations. SF Muni, the city bus system, goes everywhere but can be crowded at rush hour. The historic “F” Line Trolley runs along Market Street. A Taxi service like Lyft or walking are great ways to get around, too.

When traveling to and from the airport you can take the BART rapid rail, Caltrain commuter rail, or SamTrans bus route. A taxi service like Lyft is around $40 from San Francisco International Airport and the Oakland International Airport to downtown.

Before Europeans arrived there were two groups of Native Americans living in the bay area. In 1769 the Spanish led an expedition claiming the area, and shortly after that built a mission. In the 19th century, whaling ships and traders made their way to the San Francisco area and the population continued to grow. On April 1906 an earthquake struck measuring 8.25 on the Richter scale. 28,000 buildings were destroyed and 250,000 people were made homeless. After the earthquake the town was rebuilt. Today San Francisco continues to grow as a multicultural city with a population of 870,000.

San Francisco is known for its cool summers, breath taking views, foodie paradise, and green way of living. In the winter the high averages 61º with a low of 46º. In spring the high is 63º with a low of 49º. In summer the high is 68º with a low of 51º. And in the fall the high is 71º with a low of 51º. San Francisco is famous for if you don’t like the weather, wait an hour. It varies drastically throughout the day, bringing a bit of everything every day.

San Francisco is known for its seafood. Cioppino is a seafood stew made with everything but the kitchen sink. Try fresh fish such as oysters or ceviche, you wont be disappointed. If you’re ready for a change from seafood, try San Francisco’s Mission-style burrito. They are named some of the best in the world. Finish it off with a hot fudge sundae from Ghiradelli!

Layer up! In the bay area it can be warm during the day, but as soon as the sun sets, the temperature can drop. It also gets windy by the water. Locals rarely wear shorts because of this weather change. Cute and comfortable walking shoes are favored over flip flops, and everyone carries a reusable bag. Plastic bags are illegal and you have to pay for paper.
