Finding Your Way

Within Charleston proper, walking is often the quickest & best way to get around. King Street defines the downtown area, the main marker for where you’ll find things to keep you entertained. Of course, there is a ton of history outside of the city proper & ride-shares like Lyft are the best means for getting around. CARTA is a free trolley service around downtown, but pay attention to the hours. If you're looking to get out on the water, check out HOBA, a local app known as the Uber of Boating.

Airport Deets

Charleston Airport (CHS) is only 11 miles from downtown. A Lyft is often the best way to get into town and will cost about $25 & take about 20-25 minutes. The Downtown Shuttle costs $15/person & departs within 15 minutes of request. It’s a shared ride & can make stops along the way, so plan accordingly.

History

Originally inhabited by the Cusabo Indians, King Charles II founded Charleston in 1670 as "Charles Town.” The King granted this town to 8 of his loyal friends who turned it into a major port town. Because of this, it was often a target of pirate attacks. Blackbeard actually attacked ships and took hostages which he ransomed for a chest of medicines! It played an instrumental role in the American Revolution and was the first battlefield of the Civil War. After the wars, it would grow from a colonial seaport to a wealthy city.

Weather

Annual temperatures average 68º, with the highest average of 88º occurring in July & the lowest of 43º occurring in January. Precipitation is prevalent year-round with the rainy season happening June-September.

Local Delicacies

Food is a defining feature of Charleston. Grilled oysters, low country southern shrimp & grits, okra with everything & sausage gravy on everything. It’s also home to James Beard and Michelin starred chefs such as Sean Brock. Try it all with a side of sweet tea.

Souvenirs

King Street is one of the 10 best shopping areas in the US, so shopping is a must. Food is always popular & some of our favorites are High Wire Distilling sorghum whiskey, Anson Mills Carolina gold rice, & peach-basil jam from Callie's. If you’re looking for something a little more unique, oyster knives, Charleston porcelain, or a Sweetgrass basket from the Historic Market are great mementos. These baskets have been being handmade for more than 3 centuries & are incredible works of art.

Style

"Less is best & keep it classy." King Street is like a runway — men & women dress to be seen. Lots of linen, bowties, & dresses. Southern Belles are everywhere here. Polos or button down shirts are popular for guys, & jackets are expected in fancier spots.

Must Know

History flows through these streets if you know where to look. In 2008 on Sullivan’s Island, a bench was placed commemorating the spot where nearly 40% of slaves landed in the US. It was the first "Bench by the Road" & now many more have been built in significant locations in honor of this city’s black history. Charleston has grown and changed and has received numerous accolades in recent years including “America’s Most Friendly City," “The Most Polite & Hospitable City” and in 2016, “The World’s Best City” by Travel + Leisure.
