History

Denver was founded in 1858 as a gold mining town. Once the gold ran out, it became the home for new miners heading into the mountains. Denver continued to grow quickly and became the capital of Colorado in 1876. Until World War II, Denver was sustained by sales of minerals and ranch products. After the war, oil and gas companies moved into the downtown area and the city prospered, adding skyscrapers to its landscape. Colorado would continue to be a cutting edge state, being the first to legalize marijuana. It is one of the only cities with all five major sports right in the heart of the city.
